About Our Organization

Heart House, Inc., is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to individuals in need of
emergency and temporary shelter in southeastern Indiana. We serve people in Dearborn,
Franklin, Ohio, Ripley, and Switzerland counties. We are uniquely located near the borders of
Ohio and Kentucky - Dearborn and Franklin counties border Ohio while Switzerland and Ohio
counties border Kentucky.
Founded in 1998, Heart House provides temporary housing to families with children, single
individuals or married adults who have become homeless through emergency circumstances
or household crises and are lacking any other options for safe housing. As the only emergency
shelter in southeastern Indiana, Heart House has served over 1500 homeless individuals from
its formal opening in March 2002 to January 2009 (35% of these were children).
Heart House has also developed transitional housing for those leaving the shelter. While in
our Tanglewood Apartment facility, families live and pay modest rent while planning their
eventual return to market rate housing. Offering a controlled environment where tenants
re-learn maintenance of financial obligations while receiving financial literacy training fills in the
gap between emergency shelter and a self-sufficient lifestyle. We have found that transitional
housing breaks the cycle between overwhelming realities where no support is offered after
reinsertion of the client back into society that lead back to a homeless or emergency situation.
Heart House has made a significant impact on the communities it serves by reducing and/or
saving public costs associated with helping those in need.
Heart House reduces the frustration felt by those in need and by those wishing to provide aid -
a steady and stable "home" environment to which all can be referred for assistance.
